goal

How to configure DHCP to hand out SLP/CMD information.

fact

Novell NetWare 5.0

Novell DHCP 3.x

Formerly TID 2941327

symptom

NetWare 5 clients getting SLP/CMD configuration from a DHCP Server.

fix

CMD configuration: The clients released with NetWare 5 are capable of obtaining CMD configuration through DHCP. CMD by default tries to obtain configuration information from DHCP even when you statically configure the IP address of the client. CMD reverts to its default settings when it is not able to obtain information from DHCP.

You can configure CMD to not try to obtain information from DHCP by modifying the settings for the IPX Compatibility Adapter.

The CMD parameters that you can configure through DHCP are:

 * CMD Network Number
 * Server Resolution Time
 * IP Address of Migration Agents

Theses are configured under DHCP option 63 (NWIP) and using sub-options 12, 13, and 14. This is accomplished by the client sending a DHCPINFORM packet after it has bound TCP/IP.

SLP configuration: The NetWare5 client will also by default try and get SLP configuration from a DHCP server even if you statically assign your IP address. This is done by the client sending a DHCPINFORM packet requesting DHCP options 78 (directory agent) and 79 (service scope).

Once a client boots up and obtains an IP address (through DHCP or static assignment) the client sends out a DHCPINFORM packet asking the SLP configuration, options 78 and 79. If DHCP 3.0 server is configured to provide this information, it will send a DHCPACK to the client with the information. The client will then send out a DHCPINFORM packet asking for option 63 (the CMD configuration information which are sub-options of option 63).

If you select custom install and choose "IP with IPX Compatibility" or "IP only (remove IPX if present)". Selecting either of these will cause the client to send a DHCPINFORM packet out requesting SLP information from a DHCP server. If you select IP only a second DHCPINFORM packet is NOT sent out requesting CMD information.
