goal
How to avoid Relaying or Spamming.
How to prevent Relaying or Spamming.
How to avoid spamming (turn off message routing) with GWIA and SMTP gateway.
fact
Novell Groupwise 6
Novell GroupWise 5
Novell GroupWise Internet Agent (GWIA)
symptom
The GWIA or SMTP gateway processing slowly.
The GWIA or SMTP gateway processing thousands of messages.
The GWIA or SMTP/MIME gateway will show multiple messages bound for outside domains being processed and queued back out to the destination host. The sender of these "bounced" or "relayed" messages constantly changes. The messages can sometimes number in the thousands and slow the gateway down to the point to where the valid messages do not get through to the GroupWise gateway recipients.
cause
The GWIA or the SMTP/MIME Gateway can be used as a relay host. While this can be useful for some sites it can also be taken advantage of by outside users looking for an SMTP host to route their mail. This practice is referred to by some as spamming. The current versions of the GWIA and SMTP/MIME gateway accept any mail that is received on its SMTP port. If the host being addressed in the RCPT TO line is not a valid name the gateway is configured to receive for then the gateway will attempt to resolve the host and route the message to the proper destination.
fix
Go to the GWIA properties in ConsoleOne (GW 6) or NWADMIN (GW 5), select the Access Control tab and then SMTP Relay. In the SMTP Relay dialog choose Prevent message relaying. Restart GWIA. (Choosing Prevent message relaying adds the /norouting switch to the GWIA.CFG file. This file is not meant to be updated manually, use ConsoleOne or NWADMIN to make changes. For information on matching options in ConsoleOne or NWADMIN with startup switches seen in the GWIA.CFG file see TID2932504).
For the SMTP/MIME Gateway (dated 8/15/96 or later); edit the WPGATE\SMTP\GWSMTP.CFG file and add the /norouting switch, then restart the gateway.
Go to the GWIA properties in ConsoleOne (GW 6) or NWADMIN (GW 5), select the Access Control tab and then SMTP Relay. In the SMTP Relay dialog choose Prevent message relaying. Restart GWIA. (Choosing Prevent message relaying adds the /norouting switch to the GWIA.CFG file in 5.2 but does not add anything in 5.5. This file is not meant to be updated manually, use ConsoleOne or NWADMIN to make changes. For information on matching options in ConsoleOne or NWADMIN with startup switches seen in the GWIA.CFG file see TID2932504)
For the SMTP/MIME Gateway (dated 8/15/96 or later); edit the GWSMTP.CFG file and add the /norouting switch, then restart the gateway.
Make sure GWIA has been patched to the latest version available.
NOTE: GWIA will accept the relay message, place it in the GWPROB directory and send an undeliverable back stating ACCESS DENIED to the sender. GroupWise 6 does not do this as it does not accept the message.
