Symptom
"LOGIN-4.20.21-430: The following drive mapping operation could not be completed.
[ROOT I:-[server]\[volume]:[directory]:
The error code was 8989"
In this case the user had a profile script with the following command:
MAP ROOT I:=FS1\USER:%CN
%CN is the login script variable for the currently logged-in user Common Name.
Cause
The user did not have any access rights to the home directory, so NetWare would refuse the request for a mapped connection. Normally when a new user is created with a home directory, it would automatically create this trustee assignment. Trustee rights would not be granted if the following situation occurred:
1. A user is created without a home directory
2. The admin creates the home directory manually (from dos or the 95/NT Explorer)
3. The admin goes back into the user object to assign a home directory.
Since the directory structure existed prior to being assigned to the user, NetWare does not make a trustee assignment. If the directory did not exist before being assigned to the user as a home directory, NetWare will create the trustee assignment.
Solutions
Assign FRWCMEA trustee rights to the user's home directory. This can be accomplished by the following steps:
1. Launch NWADMIN (NetWare Administrator)
2. Find the volume object in the tree that holds the user's home directory (usually ServerName_VolumeName in the same context as the Server object).
3. Double-click on the volume which will show it's file system.
4. Browse down the directory structure until you find the user's home directory.
5. Right-click on it and choose details.
6. Select the Trustees of this Directory tab.
7. Click Add a trustee and then browse to find the user object of the home directory
8. Make sure the File Scan, Read, Write, Create, Erase, Modify, and Access Control boxes are checked (these are the default rights given to a user for their home directory when it is usually created).
9. Click OK to save this assignment.
This assignment can also be made from FILER, NETADMIN, or using the GRANT command-line executable.
