NE2000-DOS-13 the MLID could not register

Symptom

When trying to load MLID error NE2000-DOS-13 the MLID could not register protocol id 00 for protocol IPX for FRAME=Ethernet_802.3 was returned.

Troubleshooting

Customer tried swapping nic cards with no success, then tried switching back to previous memory manager with same resulting error.

Cause

Customer was running into conventional memory problem when trying to view a page in a word processing application. Upon looking at memory, customer realized that LSL, NE2000, IPXODI, and NETX were not loading high even though they were defined as such in the STARTNE.BAT. As a result, the customer tried switching from a windows emm.386 file to cemm.386 (compaq memory manager). After doing this, the above error was returned.

Solutions

Vanilled the client and NE2000 loaded fine. Added HIMEM.SYS and NE2000 loaded fine. Loaded original emm.386 and NE2000 loaded but not in high memory even though it was defined to load high. Mouse driver was conflicting and when remmed out allowed NE2000 load high. Smartdrive was conflicting TSR.
