Compaq Contura Laptops using SLIP/PPP

Symptom

When a workstation or host on the network tries to ping a workstation attached via SLIP, LWPCON shows packets coming in, but none going out in the Interface Statistics menu. The workstation on the LAN which is trying to ping the workstation attached via SLIP, gets a message "No response from x.x.x.x". Additionally, when the workstation tries to ping another station, even the Netblazer, no packets go out.

The Laptop machines with the problem are a Compaq Contura Aero 433C with a Practical Peripherals TMI 14,400 FXMT external modem and a Compaq Contura 425CX with an internal PCMCIA modem. They are using Procomm Plus for DOS to make the connection in DOS. Procomm runs a script that captures the IP information from the Netblazer and edits the NET.CFG file with that information.

The following load order is used during boot up:

LSL.COM
SLIP_PPP.COM /e
PCPLUS /script name
TCPIP.EXE

Cause

When SLIP_PPP.COM is loaded prior to the Procomm Plus for DOS, it takes control of the COM port and does not share it with Procomm Plus, even though Procomm Plus was used as the dialing mechanism. Packets can be received but not sent.

Solutions

Change the load order of the stack and third-party communications package (Procomm Plus for DOS v2.0) to the followimg:

PCPLUS /script name
LSL.COM
SLIP_PPP.COM /e
TCPIP.EXE

See the LWP42D.EXE patch text file for further explaination on SLIP/PPP load order issues.
