Symptom

The system administrator wanted to prevent users from copying files from the NetWare file server to a local drive.

Troubleshooting

The Copy Inhibit file attribute is only available for Macintosh (MAC) files.

See Document ID FYI.W.0383, "Copy Inhibit Flag", in the NSE for some additional information.

Solutions

For DOS files, the X (Execute Only) flag can be used to prevent users from copying files from the NetWare file server to a local drive. Once a file has been flagged with the X attribute, the X (Execute Only) flag cannot be removed. See "Attributes" in the NetWare 3.12 Concepts manual for more information.

Additionally, there are some 3rd party utilities that provide enhancements or alternatives to the above solution. X-AWAY.ZIP provides a utility to clear the X (Execute Only) attribute. SOFTCOP.ZIP provides Software Cop v1.1a - License Metering that prevents users from copying files from the file server to a local drive. Both X-AWAY.ZIP and SOFTCOP.ZIP are ONLY available in the NOVUSER forum on CompuServe. X-AWAY.ZIP is located on the NOVUSER forum, library 7. SOFTCOP.ZIP is located on the NOVUSER forum, library 9. Novell does not distribute or support these 3rd party utilities.
