abstract

NWFTPD15.ZIP contains NWFTPD.NLM v5.10.00, Dec 28, 2009, which slightly alters NWFTPD.NLM's method of unloading itself, to improve FTP failover or migration scenarios in a NetWare Cluster.

details

Overview:

NWFTPD.NLM v5.10.00, Dec 28, 2009 has a slightly altered method of unloading itself, to improve FTP failover or migration scenarios in a NetWare Cluster.

System Requirements:

This update requires NetWare 6.5 SP8. It is not supported on NetWare 6.0 or NetWare 5.1.

NetWare FTP Server must previously have been installed from the NetWare CD, to supply other FTP components.

Installation:

1. If you wish to retain the older file, save or rename the existing SYS:SYSTEM\NWFTPD.NLM to NWFTPD.SP8 (or other desired name).

2. Copy the NWFTPD.NLM file supplied by this download into SYS:SYSTEM.

3. A. For a clustered system, offline the resources which provide FTP services. Verify NWFTPD has truly unloaded on each node. Then bring the resources back online. Alternatively, for less impact, you could leave the resources up but (on the nodes where they reside) manually execute the NWFTPD commands found in their cluster resource stop and start scripts.

B. For a stand-alone system, UNLOAD NWFTPD and then execute FTPSTART.NCF. If that file does not exist, LOAD NWFTPD.

Uninstalling:

If the old file was saved / renamed in step 1, an 'uninstall' can be accomplished deleting the new NWFTPD.NLM and returning the old file to it's original name and location. Then repeat installation step #3.

Technical Support Information:

Bugzilla 524729: During rapid cluster resource migrations from one node to another, it is possible that the method used to tell NWFTPD to unload itself may not completely finish its tasks. This could lead to cases where the resource would come up on the new node, but then immediately unload NWFTPD. This has been corrected. Specifically:

Old behavior: Anytime NWFTPD.NLM found "UNLOAD_THIS_INSTANCE=YES" set in the FTPSERV.CFG file, it would unload itself, then reset that flag back to NO. This was true regardless of whether NWFTPD found this condition upon first loading / initializing, or later, after being up and running.

New behavior: When NWFTPD is first loading and initializing, "UNLOAD_THIS_INSTANCE=YES" will no longer cause NWFTPD.NLM to unload. The intention of this flag is to unload an already-running instance of NWFTPD, not prevent a new instance from coming up. With this change, if this setting is found upon initial load, it will simply be set back to NO without causing NWFTPD to unload.
