details
Overview:
PAcvrt.exe is a windows utility that enables the migration of all NDPS printer agents on the NDPS Manager using the selected target gateway(s) to the selected Novell gateway. In addition, this tool can be used to enable iPrint on all Printer agents on the selected NDPS Manager and to configure the iPrint security options. The difference between PACvrt2g and PACvrt2h is the addition of an option to convert the Konica Minolta gateway.
Installation:
Extract the downloaded executable and copy the files to a new directory on a Windows workstation that has the Novell Client for Windows installed. We recommend the directory be newly created (such as c:\
<< Notes >>
Printer agents that are using gateways that are not selected from the "Source Gateways to Convert" check boxes will not be migrated.
Only Printer agents that are using the TCP-IP protocol will be migrated. Printer agents that are configured to use the IPX protocol will not be migrated.
This is an All or Nothing migration. All printer agents running the selected source gateway(s) will be converted. If "Enable iPrint" options are selected these options will be applied to all printer agents
A log file that reports which printers were found, what gateway changes were or were not made, and the iPrint enabling changes that were made is written to C:\PAcvrt_log.txt. This file is displayed after the conversion has been completed.
It is recommended that this procedure be done after normal business hours to minimize interruption of print services for users.
<< Running the Tool >>
It is important that the following steps be followed to successfully migrate printer agents to a different gateway, or to enable iPrint on existing printer agents.
1.) Log into the server hosting the NDPS Manager that you want to migrate. You must have admin rights to the file server. This application requires Client32 to be installed on the workstation.
2.) Back up the NDPS Manager's MOD database on the file server BEFORE you do anything. If you want to undo the migration you will need to have a current backup of the database to restore from. To do this, at the server console go to the NDPS Manager's "Available Options" menu and select "NDPS Manager Status and Control". Select "Database Options", then "Backup Database Files". The database should backup rather quickly.
<<<< NOTE >>>>
You will not be able to undo changes made by this tool if you do not complete this step.
3.) After taking the backup wait 5 minutes to let NDS synchronize.
4.) Create a backup directory off of the \\[PSM Host Volume]\NDPS\[SOME-RANDOM-NUMBER].PSM directory and manually copy the PSMDBSAV.DAT file to your backup directory. You will need this backup file if you want to back out the changes made by this tool.
5.) Run the PAcvrt.exe utility. After the utility starts, enter the name of the server's NDS Tree in the first edit box. Enter the NDPS Manager's Full NDS
Name in the second edit box. (.MyManager.OU.O )
5.) If you are converting printer agents to a Novell gateway, check the checkboxes for the gateway(s) that you want to convert in the source gateways list. Then select the desired target Novell gateway. << NOTE >> If no source gateways are selected, no printer agents will be converted.
6.) If you are enabling iPrint on Printer Agents, check the "Enable iPrint on all Printer Agents..." check box then select the appropriate iPrint security model. The default is "Allow non-secure connections to printers, (No SSL or authentication)". Or, if you want to enable your printers to use SSL, select "Require secure connection to printers (SSL and authentication)". For additional information on iPrint security models, see the iPrint documentation
NOTE: If the "Enable iPrint on all Printer Agents..." check box is not checked no printer agents will be enabled for iPrint. If the checkbox is checked, ALL Printer Agents on the NDPS Manager will be enabled.
7.) Click Start.
In testing, the execution time is about 10 seconds to convert 500 printer agents. Your results may vary.
<< NOTE >>
After running pacvrt.exe all printer agents have been updated with the selected Gateway and/or iPrint changes. However, they will continue running under the current Gateway and iPrint configurations until the NDPS Manager is shut down and restarted. Shutting down and restarting the NDPS Manager with 500 printer agents will interrupt print services for about 10 to 20 minutes. Your time may vary depending on the gateway that is currently running, the number of printer agents, and the processor speed of your server. After converting to the NDPSGW.NLM (NOVELL SNMP GATEWAY) shutdown and load times for 500 printer agents should be 2 to 3 minutes.
8.) After the NDPS Manager has been reloaded verify that all of the printer agents are healthy.
NOTE: When reloading the NDPS Manager after converting printer agents you may see some Printer Agents who's state is not bound. If you have any printer agents on the server whose state is "Not Bound", shut down and restart that printer agent. This can be done from iManager or from the NDPS Manager console on the file server. The printer agent should load without errors. Subsequent loading of the NDPS Manager should bring all Printer Agents on line without errors.
9.) After verifying that everything is OK back up the NDPS Manager's MOD database to preserve the new gateway settings.
10.) <<<< Remember >>>>, if you ever want to back out the changes made by this tool you need to manually copy the PSMDBSAV.DAT file to your own backup directory << BEFORE >> you run this tool.
Back Out Procedure:
<<<< NOTE >>>>
If you want to back out the migration changes made by this tool, you will need to complete the following steps:
1.) If the NDPS Manager is currently running, unload it.
2.) From the \\[PSM Host Volume]\NDPS\[SOME-RANDOM-NUMBER].PSM directory, delete or rename PSMDB.DAT. This file is marked as transactional. You will need to remove the transactional setting from this file before you will be able to delete it.
3.) Copy the PSMDBSAV.DAT file that you previously saved in step 2.) from your backup directory to the \\[PSM
HostVolume]\NDPS\[SOME-RANDOM-NUMBER].PSM directory and rename it to PSMDB.DAT.
4.) Load NDPSM.NLM.
<< NOTE >> The backup database is a snapshot of printer agents at the time the backup was made. If you have deleted or created printer agents since making the change to the Novell gateway, those printer agent changes will NOT be included. If you have added printers, you will need to recreate those printer agents. If you have deleted printer agents, you will need to delete those printer agents again.
Known Problems and Limitations:
Please send feedback regarding this utility or this readme (positive or negative) to: patchfeedback@novell.com. Use PAcvrt2h.exe as the subject of the message. Your detailed comments are appreciated.
TID 10095744: PAcvrt.exe truncates the conversion of long DNS printer names
TID 10097128: Converting from HP Gateway to Novell SNMP Gateway the port number is always converted to "Passthrough".
Currently, PACvrt does not have an option to convert Printer Agents using the Canon Gateway to the Novell Gateway. This is being considered for a future release of PACvrt. To manually convert a Printer Agent to the Novell Gateway, follow these steps:
- go to the NDPS Manager screen on the server console
- choose Printer Agent List
- hit ENTER on the Printer Agent you wish to configure
- hit ENTER on Information (See Form)
- hit ENTER on Gateway Status: Active
- hit the INSERT key
- hit ENTER to the message
- Replace the existing Gateway Command with the following:
NDPSGW PORT=RAW HOSTADDRESS=X.X.X.X
(replace X.X.X.X with the IP address of the printer)
- hit the ESC key
- hit ENTER to the Yes prompt
- hit ENTER to the prompt instructing you to restart the Printer Agent.
- hit ESC to back a screen
- hit ENTER on Status and Control for that printer agent.
- hit ENTER on Shutdown Printer
- hit ENTER on on the Shutdown status
- hit ENTER on Start Up Printer
