Overview of Installing and Updating SLES 9 For OES Customers

OES customers who want to install a SLES 9 system without OES services will receive patches from the Novell Portal, at https://you.novell.com/update, using YaST Online Update. In order to be able to retrieve patches from the Novell Portal, the system must meet the following requirements:

  • OES license registration with a valid Novell Portal account
  • System installation must be started from the first SLES 9 FCS CD
  • YaST Online Update must be patched and able to pull updates from a secure (https) server

The system will be installed and updated in the following manner:

  1. System is booted for installation using SLES 9 CD1.
  2. OES CDs 4-8 used to install packages during file copy.
  3. YOU is directed to https://youfix.novell.com/youfix to retrieve and apply YaST Online Update patch for https servers.
  4. YOU is directed to https://you.novell.com/update for continuing updates. Login credentials are the Novell Portal account used to register OES.

Registering Open Enterprise Server

In order to authenticate to the Novell update server, OES must be registered with a valid Novell Portal account. The method used to register the account will depend on the license type. Possible license types include the following:

  • Evaluation license
  • Volume licensing purchase

In order to obtain and register an OES evaluation license, complete the following:

  1. Go to the Novell Open Enterprise Server Evaluation website, by opening a browser and going to https://www.novell.com/products/openenterpriseserver/eval.html.
  2. The OES Evaluation page lists three steps to complete. Step two contains a link to download the Linux- and/or NetWare-based Open Enterprise Server. Select this link.
  3. Login using your Novell Portal account credentials. A Novell Portal account can be created by selecting the "create new account" link on the login page.
  4. The resulting screen will show an activation code. The activation code is only useful for activation Red Carpet/rug and is not needed.

In order to obtain and register an OES volume license purchase, complete the following:

  1. After OES has been purchased, Novell sends an email to the customer's main contact containing instructions for registering the product.
  2. To register OES, select the link in the email for OES under the Products Ordered section.
  3. The URL launches the Novell Portal login screen. Log in using the Novell Portal credentials of the user who will be the main administrator of licenses for your organization. To create a Novell Portal account, select the "create new account" link.
  4. The resulting screen will show an activation code and license download information. The activation code is only useful for activation Red Carpet/rug and is not needed.

Installing the SLES 9 System

Although a SLES 9 system can be installed using OES CD1, the product definitions do not allow YaST Online Update to retrieve patches from online servers. For this reason, the system install should be started using SLES 9 CD1.

OES customers can download SLES 9 CD1 from https://download.novell.com/sendfile?fileid=ifVmcyYyHI8~. Downloading the remaing SLES 9 CDs is unnecessary as they are included in the OES media as CDs OES 4-8.

To install the SLES 9 system so it is ready to update from the Novell Portal, complete the following:

  1. Insert SLES 9 CD1 into the system and boot.
  2. From the SuSE boot menu, selectInstallation.
  3. Follow the YaST prompts to configure the installation.
  4. When prompted to insert SLES disks 2-6, insert the corresponding OES CD media and select OK.
  5. Complete the installation. If updating during installation, see the section title "Updating During Installation."

Updating During Installation

To update YaST during installation, complete the following:

  1. After configuring the network, YaST asks to test the internet connection. Select Yes, Test Connection to the Internet and then select Next.
  2. YaST attempts to download the latest release notes and checks for available updates. If the test is successful, selectNext. Otherwise select Back twice and troubleshoot the network configuration.
  3. Select Yes, Run Online Update Now and then select OK when YaST asks whether or not to run the online update.
  4. YaST Online Update loads and shows the configuration screen. If YaST Online Update needs to be patched, the install location will show http://sdb.suse.de/youfix. SelectNext.

  6. Patches are downloaded and installed. If prompted, selectInstall Patch.
  7. The progress is displayed. When the process completes, selectFinish.
  8. YaST runs the SUSEconfig process to complete the update.
  9. Continue with the installation as normal. After clicking Finish on the final YaST screen, YaST Online Update loads again so patches can be installed.
  10. From the Installation Source drop-down list, selectNovell Accounts Only. If the selection is not present, enter https://you.novell.com/update in the Location field.
  11. Select Next.
  12. When prompted to authenticate, enter your Novell Portal login credentials.
  13. The patch list is loaded from the server and displayed in the standard YOU window. Select the patches to install and selectAccept.
  14. Read and dismiss any information windows and affirm any confirmation windows while the patches are downloaded and installed.
